VISIT THE GREEN GATEWAY OF INDIA

Situated along the Malabar coast of southwestern India, Kerala state is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.  It is renowned as a tropical paradise where the rich traditions of a multi-cultural population thrive.  Kerala’s moderate climate, its thriving artisanal industry, and its colorful festivals make it a desirable destination for those adventurous travelers also keen to explore its beautiful beaches and estuaries, its wild-life sanctuaries, and its evergreen forests, where stunning flora and fauna abound.

Kerala is essentially a coastal plain that is traversed on its eastern and northern flank by the Sahyadri (the Benevolent mountains), also known as the Western Ghat.  This mountainous region is characterized by its mountain peaks and narrow, deep valleys and river gorges; forty-one of Kerala’s forty-four rivers originate in the Sahyadri.  Sparsely populated areas of the region are covered with dense forests, while areas where there are more accessible, less wooded lands are used for agriculture, including coffee and tea plantations.  Just west of the Sahyadri lie the midlands, comprising the arid plains of central Kerala.  Here, the endless rolling hills and shallow valleys of the region offer stunning vistas equal in beauty to those found in the Sahyadri highlands.  As the elevation of the midlands decreases in a westerly direction, the land gives way to rice paddies, groves of rubber trees, and fruit orchards, as well as farmland where flowering black pepper vines, cassava, and other plants are raised.  Finally, the coastal belt forming Kerala’s lowlands is criss-crossed on its eastern flank by an interconnected network of canals and river estuaries running the length of Kerala state and comprises, just to the west, the rich, fertile coastal flatlands dotted with rice paddies and coconut groves.

The number of international visitors to Kerala has increased yearly, among those visitors who wish to benefit from Ayurveda, Indian’s ancient system of medicine that is also the world’s oldest, comprehensive system of natural medicine.  Mentioned in the Vedas over five thousand years ago, Ayurveda is a system of healing that espouses a holistic approach to health based on balancing and nurturing body, mind, and spirit.
