Pottli massage is yet another kind of therapy offered in traditional Kerala Ayurveda. This age-old technique is instrumental in relieve the pain and give strength to muscles and joints. Pottli massage therapy is done onto specific pressure points using heated herbal pouches which contain a selection of Ayurvedic herbs both fresh and dried, such as powder of fenugreek seeds, devadar, turmeric, satahua, lime, mustard, leaves such as tamarind, castor oil plant, moringa, calotropis or egg, lime, njavara rice etc that are carefully chosen based on Ayurvedic constitution and what are being treated for. They are then packed into a muslin cloth and dipped in warm medicated oil/ medicated milk/ dhanyamla or used as dry. When the heated Pottli is massaged onto the body, it opens the pores and relaxes the muscles, allowing the carefully selected herbs to work on the body and mind.
The Potli massage is often recommended for illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, frozen shoulders, osteoarthritis and so on. The content of the Pottli is specific to the illness and the person’s body and is best decided by an ayurvedic practitioner. Pottali treatment helps to relieve pain and inflammation, improve blood circulation and flexibility. Thus rejuvenate, relax tensed muscles and reduces stress, give the skin and body a much needed detox, revitalize and purify the body, improve blood circulation and ease tension in the muscles.
